What was the challenge?

Berlin’s growing housing shortage was making it increasingly difficult for essential workers to relocate and settle in the city. While berlinovo already provided furnished housing solutions, its digital presence lacked clarity, visibility, and a user-focused structure.

The platform served multiple audiences at once — individual tenants, corporate coordinators, and public stakeholders — resulting in fragmented navigation, unclear communication, and high user drop-off. The challenge was to redesign the experience into a clearer, more accessible platform that better supported both apartment discovery and corporate housing coordination.

UI/UX Design

Designing for different user needs

To redesign the platform, I mapped the needs, behaviours, and pain points of different user groups — from tenants and nurses to corporate coordinators and finance teams. Analysing existing journeys revealed inefficient workflows, unclear navigation, and fragmented communication shaped by manual processes and generic enquiry paths.

These insights informed a clearer platform structure with two distinct user flows: one focused on apartment discovery for individual tenants, and another tailored to corporate housing coordination. The redesigned interface prioritised usability, trust, and scalability through structured enquiry flows, improved navigation, and location-first browsing aligned with the existing brand identity.

The Campaign

A Campaign for Berlin’s Workforce

Alongside the platform redesign, berlinovo launched a city-wide awareness campaign highlighting the growing housing challenges affecting Berlin’s essential workforce. The campaign connected the broader social issue to berlinovo’s housing mission, strengthening brand visibility across digital and physical touchpoints.

Campaign assets, printed materials, and branded giveaways were developed for conferences and public events, helping extend the initiative into professional and political contexts.

It's a Wrap!

Takeaways

This project reinforced the importance of aligning brand communication with user experience. By simplifying the platform structure and defining clearer user paths, the redesign created a more focused and scalable digital experience for both tenants and corporate partners. It also highlighted how visual systems, UX thinking, and communication strategy can work together to support complex public-facing services.

Takeaways

Working through this project revealed several opportunities for future development — from workflow refinements to expanded role-specific features. Within the scope of the course, I chose to focus on the Home and the Smart Scan flow experiences, as these are the core interactions that enable a fast, reliable, real-time inventory system. Some of the broader design goals — such as advanced analytics, procurement tools, finance dashboards, and full role-based permissions — remain intentionally out of scope for this phase. These areas represent natural next steps and hold strong potential to grow the concept into a fully integrated, multi-device operational ecosystem.
